Overview: James and the Giant Peach

James and the Giant Peach is an amusing children's novel written by Roald Dahl. Based on the adventures of an orphan boy, it covers themes like friendship, kindness, courage and abandonment. James is the protagonist, who comes upon a giant magic peach and enjoys a surreal cross-world adventure with six magically-altered garden bugs. This exciting and entertaining story is strangely eerie with a dark comic twist. Dahl presents a humorous re-interpretation of fairytale-like characters, creating surprise endings instead of a traditional happily-ever-after.

Poor James Henry Trotter is left an orphan at the age of four when his parents are killed in a tragic accident. He is then placed in the care of two wicked relatives; Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. They constantly abuse James, both physically and emotionally. Overcome by extreme sadness and grief over his harsh life, James meets a mysterious man. He gives him a magical gift that should turn his fortunes around. However, James drops the magic crystals on a peach tree. And so begins his adventures. The peach tree is magnified to super large size, almost like a house. On entering the peach, James soon becomes friends with all the insects and rodents living there. The charming characters and witty nature of James makes this book an absolute delight to read.
