Overview: Kafka On The Shore

Kafka On The Shore is an intriguing and inexplicable fiction novel that has two plots running parallelly in alternate chapters. Written by Haruki Murakami, the book is based on an Oedipal curse upon one of the two protagonists. First published in 2002, this book is a journey of metaphysical reality.

One of the protagonists, Kafka Tamura, runs away from home to find his long-missing mother and sister and to escape the Oedipal curse. On the other hand, Nakata, the other protagonist, is working as a cat finder in his old age. He is a simpleton who could not get over an affliction that he had from a wartime during his childhood.

One day, Nakata, in search of a lost cat, happens to set foot on the road that takes him away from home for the first time in his life. As time passes, several unusual incidents happen that take Nakata closer to Kafka, but neither of them realises or understands the changes. Both of them are on an odyssey that is filled with audacious and, sometimes, mesmerising events.

The protagonists face certain eerie and uncanny incidents:cats having conversations with men, fishes falling from the sky, un-aging of a forest harbour soldier since World War II and a Hegel-spouting girl being deployed by a ghost-like pimp. Amidst these events, a murder happens and no one knows either the victim or the perpetrator.

Harukami Murakami is a famous Japanese author whose works are known for their literature and the profoundly complex plots. 1Q84 and Norwegian Woods are some of his famous works.
