Overview: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou has three hundred and four pages of heart touching incidents. It is published by Ballantine Books; Reissue edition. The language is English and meant for serious readers. The book deals with the stark and naked truth of Maya's childhood and her becoming a teenager. There are controversial issues written about in the book and dealt with explicitly which may make one uncomfortable. A chapter deals with rape of a young girl. Accounts of sexual assault give Goosebumps to the reader. It is Maya, a black girl's life story growing up during depression and how she manages to win the battle. The book provides an insight into a neglected child's mind and it forces the reader of all ages to think about the identity crisis one goes through during these times and how to restore self esteem. The book is not about the victim emerging as hero but the journey itself. The book starts of with the racial slur the author had to face after shifting to United States of America from Africa which goes on further and further until she is raped at the very tender age of eight. The story describes the journey of a woman suffering from gruesome racial attack and trauma, and the rape how it changed the life of an inncoent child into that of a helpless victim. Rape has been used as a metaphor in this book. However, the book doesn't end there, it goes on to tell how she gets impregnated by age of sixteen but doesn't succumb to these grave atrocities, rather comes out as a strong and an independent woman. It describes how the education and literature can transform one's life and provide her or him with courage to topple all these sufferings and emerge as a great individual. It has received rave reviews and is a must read. The book is available on junglee.com. ISBN 10: 0345514408 and ISBN 13: 9780345514400.
