Overview: Korma

If food stories interest you, 'Korma, Kheer and Kismet: Five Seasons in Old Delhi' by Pamela Timms will add to your delight. This book is a food memoir based that takes you back in time to the old Delhi and its legendary dishes.

Like many books based on our great country, this one too is based on the initial notion of the author seeking the much talked about India. However, soon the author finds herself alienated and stranded from the real India. Frustrated, she embarks on a journey with an unexpected escape. She finds solace in the chaotic, medieval gullies of the old Delhi city. The author comes across various experiences in the Old city of Delhi that forever changes the way she thinks and experiences food, cooking and ingredients. She takes us through her quest of unraveling stories about old Delhi's beloved street food. The author takes us through vivid narratives describing Ashok's mutton korma, Bade Mians kheer, the Old and Famous jalebis, and that most elusive of Shahjahanabads winter treats, daulat ki chaat. The book is a fantastic read into the heart of the old city where the author is warmly welcomed into the extravagant food culture. The author soon comes to an awakening that Old Delhi has now become a place which she can call home. The author lives and celebrates food, family and a treasure of friends through this novel. She simply puts forth a heart-warming picture of Old Delhi as a place, as a cultural hub for food and all things India.
