Every technology have their own share of positives and negatives. LED have very long life [ 20000 - 50000 work hours] , Eco-Friendly [ No mercury ] , very less or no heating [ less fan noise, or very silent ], less electricity consumption and generally light weight and easy to carry.
On other Hand conventional projector lamps have short lamp life [ 3000-4000 work hours], not eco friendly [ uses mercury] , generates a lot of heat [means bigger cooling fan and hence more noise] , high electricity consumption and generally heavy to carry. Requires frequent lamp changes, cleaning and maintenance , buying cost of this type of projector is comparatively less but over all cost of using it is very very high. [ projector cost 5 lamp cost = real cost of projector] Generally one lamp cost between 40-60% of projector cost - for your idea. But as this technology is in market since long, hence the brightness is very high at this point of time. LED lamps are evolving but at present moment of time, it gives little less brightness. Also don't forget to check ANSI lumens, if brightness is of major concern, more the ANSI lumens, brighter the picture. Naitve Resolution of 720p[HD] is good and also supports 1080p standards [ Full HD]. Look for WXGA picture support as all the past standards will be generally supported. Check for DLP technology if you want picture with sharp crisp colors. DLP is also good for educational and office presentation. There are many other minute things, but major are covered above.
I have used both projector, but I think LED with 500 or more Ansi Lumens brightness is very good for movies, small office, small class room teaching. I am not obsessed with brand names but I follow the technology and components used in making the projector. Generally all the products are manufactured in China, whether it is big brand like Apple, Dell, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola etc etc etc.
Buy best Technology..
