Overview: Last Man in Tower

Last Man In Tower is a fictional novel written by Aravind Adiga that tells the story of one man refusing to leave his home in the face of property development. The plot of Last Man In Tower revolves around a respected Mumbai apartment complex called Vishram Society. The complex that was inaugurated in the late 1950s on the birthday of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru houses an amiable mix of Hindus, Muslims and Catholics. Its residents are shown to be like a large, cheerful family that radiate middle class respectability. One day, a charming yet ruthless real estate mogul called Dharmen Shah arrives and offers the residents of Vishram complex an amount of $330,000 per family to vacate their complex. Dharmen Shah is a character who built his empire from nothing. He wishes to build a luxurious skyscraper named Shanghai in place of Vishram complex. Driven by lust for money, all the residents of Vishram complex are thrilled by the offer. However, Dharmen meets his match in one 61 year old science teacher called Yogesh Murthy. Yogesh Murthy is fondly called Masterji by the residents and is the protagonist of the story. His firm decision to not vacate the complex puts a dent in Dharmen Shah's plans and also hampers the residents' opportunity to earn $330,000. The story then focuses on the various attempts made by the residents in order to persuade Masterji into vacating the complex. As the demolition deadline reaches closer, tensions begin to escalate; acquaintances turn into conspirators and neighbours turn against each other as everyone gradually begins to risk losing their humanity for the greater prize.
