Overview: The Last Mughal

The Last Mughal is a book highlighting the rich cultural and political history of the last monarch who ruled the city of Delhi, Bahadur Shah Zafar II. This fascinating book covers the final years of the eventful Mughal rule over India. This book has been written by William Dalrymple, who has also written other best-selling books like Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India, The Age of Kali: Indian Travels and Encounters, White Mughals: Love and Betrayal in Eighteenth Century India, and In Xanadu: A Quest. This edition of the book was published in 2007 by Penguin India.

The Last Mughal talks about an era, when the rein of Mughal Empire was coming to an end. India was preparing for a rebellion against the oppression of the East India Company. Then came the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, which was the beginning of the first major uprising against the British Empire. The book reveals that Shah Zafar had none of the powers and rights of an Emperor, because of the East India Company. In spite of his power deprivation, he successfully maintained a brilliant court and reigned over what remained of the empire. This book enables the reader to gain an insight into the skills and talents of the last Mughal. Zafar had versatile talents; he was a skilled poet and a talented calligrapher. It also casts light on the fact that it was him who supported the rebellion of the East India Company's Indian troops. It was Bahadur Shah Zafar who approved the troops to form an army, which resulted in the largest uprising British Empire had ever faced.

The Last Mughal tells the story of Zafar, the monarch who ruled the Mughal capital of Delhi and was forced to watch helplessly, as the multi-ethnic revolt of 1857 was crushed by the British Empire. The book has been written with the support of in-depth research, in order to capture the details of the Mughal Empire during the uprising. For The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize for History and Biography in 2007, as well as the Vodafone Crossword Book Award. This paperback edition of the book is available in English and has 578 pages. The ISBN 10 number of the book is 0143102435 and the ISBN 13 number of the book is 978-0143102434.
