Overview: Letters to My Son: A Father's Wisdom on Manhood

Who am I? What am I doing here? Is there a God? What is life? This inspirational collection of short writings, quotes, and journal excerpts explores the joys, sorrows, and meanings of life -- and helps provide some answers. Ranging from a letter by Georgia O'Keeffe describing a walk under the New Mexico sky to Marcel Proust's ruminations on the famous cup of tea that triggered his remembrances, Life provides a rich, expansive look at the search for meaning, embracing the paradoxical and contradictory nature of existence. Wise, profound, surprising and entertaining, this elegantly produced book will offer instruction, insight, and inspiraiton to everyone looking for a sense of purpose in life. Annotation Now in paperback, this acclaimed treasury offers real-life wisdom about what it means to be a man in the 1990s. Kent Nerburn tackles the topics men find most difficult to talk about: the difference between maleness and manhood; common temptations; the mystery of sexuality, and more. Editorial Reviews In these short selections, 25 well-known authors, e.g., Diane Ackerman, Martin Luther King, Thich Nhat Hahn, Albert Einstein, and Isabel Allende, search for the meaning of life, love, faith, meditation, and death. Very brief biographical information about each author is included at the end. While excellent passages, such as Harold Kushner's "When All You Ever Wanted Isn't Enough" and Mother Teresa's "Silence," are very moving, the overall collection is random and limited in nature. A hospital, church, or public library might possibly use it as a basis for therapy, inspiration, or discussion, but the lack of explanatory or supportive material makes this a marginal purchase.--Nancy Shires, East Carolina Univ., Greenville, NC

  1.  Absolute must read for fathers for their sons and for sons from their fathers 8 September, 2013 On Junglee.com
Had come across this book over a decade ago and repurchased a copy lately. Absolute hit. It has candid explanation of a father's life lessons and coaching for his son. The tone is pure and friendly and does not sound 'sermonic'. It talks about various phases of a man's life and maintains an unbiased and mature view about it.
