Overview: Lolita

Lolita is one of the best known, modern day classics and is about Humbert, who falls in love with Lolita. Humbert is a middle aged, college professor who is in love with his landladys 12-year-old daughter and want to possess her at any cost. The frustrated professor is unable and unwilling to end this illicit lust for the girl and is ready to go to any lengths to possess her. Does he really love her or is this sheer insanity? Is he a poet or a pervert? A tortured soul or a monster? Lolita is shocking because it is both intensely lyrical and wildly funny.

Valdmir Nabokov, the author of Lolita, was born in St Petersburg and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge before moving to Berlin. From 1923 to 1940, he published short stories, plays, novels, poems and translations in Russian and was established as one of the most accomplished Russian migr writers. Nabokov moved to the US and worked as a lecturer and professor until he retired. His other works include Laughter in the Dark, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, Nabokov's Dozen, Invitation to a Beheading, Pale Fire, The Gift and The Luzhin Defense. He was also awarded with the American National Medal for literature.

The paperback book is published by Penguin and is easily available online. Lolita is listed online under the ISBN 10 number of 0241953243 and ISBN 13 number of 9780241953242.
