Overview: Long Walk To Freedom

Long Walk To Freedom is an autobiography of the first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who fought against the legacy of apartheid. He has an honoree of the Nobel Peace Price for his dedication to fighting against racism, poverty and discrimination of all forms. The autobiography tells the inspiring and motivational story of a fighter, who never gives up no matter what the matter is, and comes out triumphant.

Nelson Mandela has covered the long journey of his life filled with more downs than ups with so much of conviction and belief. From his childhood, the education he pursues, the social upbringing that he has got, to the struggles and the excruciating discriminations he and his fellow compatriots have faced. The book, emphatically yet admirably, has delivered the thoughts and beliefs of one of the greatest freedom fighters in the history. He fought for the most basic and the most indispensable birth-right of every human:right to freedom.

The Long Walk To Freedom emphasises on the social and political aspects of apartheid in South Africa. Mandela has given a detailed narration to his 27 prison sentences, with the Robben Island prison episode which has a significant impact in his life. His struggle for the freedom of all the discriminated downtrodden ones has also had a negative effect on his family. The book portrays the life that has never backed out or bowed down, but always stood for the equality in the society. Long Walk To Freedom is a journey full of struggles, some rays of hope, lots of antipathy and bigotry, but an exuberant triumph in the end.

The book was published in 1995, and is still inspiring readers to believe in themselves and life with freedom. Nelson Mandela has also authored a book titled Conversations with Myself. You can order online the paperback edition published by Abacus with ISBN-10:9780349106533 and ISBN-13:978-0349106533.
