Overview: Matilda

Matilda is a popular children's novel by Roald Dahl, the famous British author. It tells the story of Matilda Wormwood, who is an extraordinary child with average parents, who are scornful about the talents of their daughter. Roald Dahl, who is one of the greatest story-tellers of all time, was born in 1916 in Wales. The Witches, Charlie and Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach are some of the other Roald Dahl books that have made him popular as a children's novelist. Apart from writing a lot of novels for children, Dahl has also authored a number of short stories and novellas for adults. Matilda was published on 7th March, 2013 by Puffin. A film was made in 1966 based on the book, while it was adapted to an audio reading by Joely Richardson. The story was adapted for radio by BBC and there was also a musical production based on Matilda in 2010.

Matilda is the story of a little girl who is exceptionally talented. She can understand Dickens and can also solve double digit multiplications at an early age of five and a half years. Quite surprisingly, her classmates are very fond of her in spite of the fact that she is a teacher's pet and a super-nerd. Even though everything seems to be nearly perfect in her life, it is not really so. Apart from being a child to self-centred and idiotic parents, she has nightmares of her school principal who is unsympathetic and abusive to the little children. How Matilda puts her extraordinary powers to use and breaks free the barriers around her is what is described in this charming book.

Like most of Dahl's other books, Matilda, too, enjoyed positive reviews both from critics as well as readers. Danny Devito, the director of the Matilda movie, said in an interview that Matilda was absolutely captivating... I passionately wanted to make it into a movie. This version of the story is a 256 page book, written in English. The ISBN 10 is 0141346345 for this book, while the ISBN 13 is 9780141346342.
