Overview: Mayyazhippuzhayute Theerangalil

Mayyazhipuzhayude Theerangalil - On the Banks of the River Mayyazhi - is M. Mukundan's masterpiece. It was first published in Malayalam, 1974 and falls under the genre of fiction. It was translated into English by Gita Krishnankutty, in 1999. This particular edition of the book was published by D.C. Books, on 1st April, 2010. M. Mukundan is a social activist and a Malayalam writer. He has served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Academy and has also worked for the French Embassy. He is a great storyteller and some of his works other than Mayyazhipuzhayude Theerangalil are Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma, Daivathinte Vikrithikal, Lesli Achante Kadangal, Kesavante Vilapangal and more.

The story of Mayyazhipuzhayude Theerangalil is set in Mahe. This is one of those few places, which was the colony of the French and in Malayalam it is called Mayyazhi. The meaning of the word 'Mayyazhi' is 'the eye of the sea'. True to its name, the place is simple, beautiful and yet rugged, and so is the story, which is about rebellion, love, simplicity and understanding. M. Mukundan narrates the happenings of the time when Mahe is freed from French rule. The people of Mahe are confused whether they should rejoice their new found freedom, or mourn over the loss of the 'human gods'. The book also depicts how the sea remains constant, in spite of changes in the surroundings and relationships. Although, the protagonist of the story is Dasan, his tale reflects the story of mankind.
