Overview: Meditations

Meditations is the new translation of a book that was written by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius in Greek and originally never even intended for publication. The book is on the philosophical reflections of Marcus Aurelis as he struggled to understand himself and the universe. It contains his thoughts on topics such as the nature of Gods, human rationality, the question of virtue and his thoughts on his feelings and emotions of despair, doubt, conviction and even exaltation. This brilliant piece of work has been a source of inspiration for personalities like Mathew Arnold and Bill Clinton.

Little did Marcus know that while developing his own consolations and beliefs in Meditations, he was creating a set of wise and practical maxims that the world would consult and admire for years to come. And it has indeed been two thousand years since then, and his thoughts and convictions have been followed not only by ordinary readers but also by great thinkers, leaders and statesmen. The system of metaphysics known as Stoicism is also expressed in Marcus Aurelis's Meditations. Stoicism highlights the search for inner peace and virtue in spite of the chaos of the external world by following the order and lawfulness of nature in one's personal conduct.

The book Meditations is about the honest search of a soul for virtue above pleasure and tranquillity above happiness. It is a marvellous book for personal introspection and contains an introduction, chronology, explanatory notes, general index, index of quotations and index of names. The book Meditations was written by the intellectual Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and the editor and translator of this edition is Martin Hammond, who is the headmaster of the Tonbridge School. Other notable translations by Martin Hammond include The Odyssey, The Iliad: A New Prose Translation, The Peloponnesian War (Oxford World's Classics) and Alexander the Great: The Anabasis and the Indica (Oxford World's Classics) .
