Overview: Mrutyunjay

The novel Mrutyunjay is a masterpiece of how finding the meaning of being is man's eternal question. Through this book, he investigates life through the protagonists of the Mahabharata. The non-Marathi and non-Hindi readers were deprived of this masterpiece for over 20 years until the English translation was finally published by the Writers Workshop. Mrityunjaya is the autobiography of Karna yet it is more than just that.

The author of this book manages to bring in a new stylistic innovation by combining six 'dramatic soliloquies' in order to form nine books of this novel. Out of the nine books, four books are spoken by Karna. The other books are spoken by his unwed mother Kunti, Duryodhana, Shon (his foster brother), his wife Vrishali to whom he is God and Krishna.

The author shows an uncanny resemblance between Krishna and Karna and hints at a link between them. He gives Karna a more than human aura to balance his unheroic and unmanly acts. Both Krishna and Karna were born Kshatriyas but are raised by low-cast foster parents. They both had divine origins and fight their cousins/brothers. When it comes to foster parents though, Karna, unlike Krishna does not want to ever forget them.

The end of the book describes Karna's death and funeral. This is probably the most touching part in the book. An entire book on the whole is a magnificent creation indeed!
