Overview: The Museum of Innocence

The Museum of Innocence is a novel written by Turkish author Orhan Pamuk that tells the story of one man's obsession for the woman he loves. Born in the sophisticated part of Istanbul, Kemal has had a luxurious life so far. He is engaged to Sibel; a woman who shares his financial stature, and they both belong to the inner circle of men and women, who consider themselves modern, more westernised and classy.

But one fine day, Kemal bumps into Fusün, who is not only his distant relative, but also belongs to the poorer strata of the city. Kemal, however, falls hopelessly in love with her, and though Fusün initially reciprocates, she finds out about his engagement and ends things from her side. And thus begins the saga of love and denial, infatuation and dismissal, ending up with Kemal creating the ultimate trophy a man could conjure for his love:A Museum. While the story revolves around these central characters, it also subtly highlights the stark differences in the Istanbul of the 70s and of today along with the societal bias that engulfed the city in the wake of modernisation.

This novel has also inspired the author to build an actual Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, which houses a collection of items of everyday life as well as cultural artefacts of Istanbul, based on the time period in which the book is set.

Orhan Pamuk is one of the most renowned authors to emerge from Turkey and has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work. The best-selling author of books such as The Black Book, Snow and My Name is Red has sold over eleven million copies worldwide, and his books have been translated in more than fifty languages. He has also won several other literary awards such as the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Norman Mailer Prize. Pamuk lives in Istanbul and has today joined ranks with some of the most elite writers in the world.
