Overview: My Experiments with Truth: An Autobiography: 1

My Experiments with Truth is an immortal work as also a great legacy for the coming generations of the entire world to read, to ponder and to practice. It is essentially the autobiography of The Father of India, the Mahatma meaning the great soul.

It is a comprehensive description of Gandhi's life and thoughts. The book features over 105 essays that throws light on his various experiments and covers every aspect of the great man's ethical, moral and spiritual life. The work is composed in five parts beginning with his boyhood days, his South African experiences as he initiated his experiments with the potent weapon known as Satyagraha, and his eventual transformation from a mere Mohan to the great Mahatma. These many experiments rested mainly on the primary principles of God and Truth and lasted well into 1921. After these, Gandhi's entire life became so public that there was nothing more for him to write about, and such writings came to an end.

The non-violent struggle that Gandhi began in South Africa as his first experiment was then transferred to the Indian soil. This particular experiment resulted in a high state of notoriety, controversy as also adulation for him so that he felt the need to explain himself by means of an autobiography.

Gandhi's struggle was against racism, violence and violence. He wanted to explain these to the world at large so that his novel ideas could be better understood. He was mainly seeking truth that is based on devotion to the Almighty, and stated that the turning point in his life and the challenges and success that followed, to God's will. As he tried to move closer to God, it also directed him toward purity of mind, simple living, celibacy, vegetarian diets that he described as fruitarian, and most important of all ahimsa, meaning a life sans any violence. It is exactly in this sense, Gandhi named his work The Story of My Experiments with Truth, at the same presenting it as a book of reference to anyone who wishes to pursue in his footsteps.

Gandhi's work went on to become a bestseller and translated into almost all languages on earth. And no man ever helped to change the history of the whole nation and in such a monumental scale as Gandhi did, by means of the negative, but potent weapon called Ahimsa. No wonder, many equate The Story of My Experiments with Truth, with the Bible and Gita.
