My Story is an autobiography by Malayalam poet and author Kamala Das (also known as Kamala Surayya and Madhavikutty). The book was originally published as Ente Katha in Malayalam and evoked reactions of admiration and criticism among readers and critics. My Story is, till date, Indias best-selling autobiography.
My Story is a linear narrative written in a realistic style where the author narrates the stories of her life, her marriage and her awakening as a woman and writer. The book, with 50 chapters, follows Kamala's life through missionary schools in Calcutta, to her vexed relationship with her husband, her literary career, affairs, children and a steady coming to terms with life.
The nostalgic descriptions of the family house in Kerala, the stage plays she wrote and acted with her brother and her interactions with her grand uncle who was a great scholar keeps us hooked to her story.
Das considered death as a reward for her pains in surviving. This book gives abundant evidences to her idea of death by water. The relevant passage reads: Often I have toyed with the idea of drowning myself to be rid of; My loneliness which is not unique in any way, but is natural to all. I have wanted to find rest in the sea and an escape from involvements.
Das is not seeking pity, nor justifying any of her actions. It is purely her incredible honesty that makes My Story an interesting read and what brought Das acclaim as well as some harsh criticism.
Kamala Das was the author of several novels, poetry and short stories in English and Malayalam. Das was nominated in 1984 for the Nobel Prize for literature, and has won several literary awards including the Sahitya Akademi Award in India. Dass other works include her first book of poetry, Summer in Calcutta and stories like Alphabet of Lust, Pakshiyude Manam and Neypayasam.
