Overview: The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island is a fiction novel written by Jules Verne and tells the adventures of five individuals who get stuck on an island in the South Pacific. The events in the book are inspired from the true-life incidents in the life of Alexander Selkirk, who was stranded on an island off the coast of Chile for almost five years. Five prisoners of the American civil war decide to escape the famine-stricken Virginia on an air-balloon. But after embarking on the fateful journey, they run into stormy weather and crash land on an island, east of New Zealand.

With no means to get back safely to the mainland, the group start sustaining on the island by producing fire, food and other essential amenities. During their stay, they encounter bad weather along with the wrath of wild animals. But the island has a mystery of its own, and the group must uncover it before it proves too dangerous. This book is a sequel to Verns renowned, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
