Overview: The Name Of The Rose

The Name of the Rose is the first novel written by Italian author Umberto Eco. The book is a historical murder mystery set in the year 1327. The Italian monastery of Benedictine is suspected of heresy, following which Friar William of Baskerville is set to investigate the same. He is accompanied by Adso of Melk, and together they must determine if their suspicion is true. But their arrival in the monastery is marred by a suicide, and with time, many more monks also meet a gruesome death. For very murder William finds new clues, which mostly lead to dead ends and confusion.

William and Adso then go through several books in a medieval library to get to the bottom of the mystery. With his curious nature and innate powers of logic, can William solve the mysteries that surround the abbey? The author combines biblical analysis, semiotics and medieval studies to make the story even more interesting.

Umberto Eco is a highly revered writer of fiction and children's books. Apart from these, he also writes academic texts and short stories. Eco is a professor of semiotics at the University of Bologna and is counted among the finest writers of the 20th century. His other famous works include titles such as History of Beauty, The Mystery Flame of Queen Loana, Baudolino and The Prague Cemetery. The author is known for creating illusions with his writing, wherein he introduces symbols and references to add more depth to the story. He also adds dark humour and satire to his books, for which he is renowned all over the world.
