Overview: Nashtapetta Neelambari

Nashtapetta Neelambari is a Malayalam short story by Kamala Suraiyya, who was born as Kamala Das, and is also known by her pen-name Madhavikutty. She is one of the prominent English poets and littérateurs of India and also a famous Malayalam author from Kerala. The open treatment of sexuality that is evident in most of her works, marks her as one of the most powerful women writers of India, as well as an iconoclast of her time. In 1984, Das was nominated as well as shortlisted for the Nobel Prize for Literature. She also received the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award in 1969 and the Vayalar Award in 2001. Childhood in Malabar: A Memoir, Panna, and My Story are some of Das' other notable works. D C Books published this edition of Nashtapetta Neelambari on 1st January, 2009.

Nashtapetta Neelambari has been made into a film called "Mazha", by Lenin Rajendran. Though in 1999, when the adaptation was started, Das was still known as Madhavikutty, by the time of its release, i.e., late 2000, she converted to Islam and became Kamala Suraiyya. The plot of Nashtapetta Neelambari revolves around the love story of Subhadra, the female protagonist of the book and Ramanujam Sastrigal, her music teacher. Just when Subhadra's talent for poetry begins to flourish under Ramanujam's influence, his parents intervene and he is forced to marry a village girl. Later, Subhadra becomes a doctor and gets married to Chandrashekhara, who is a computer engineer by profession. Their relationship is disturbed when Chandrashekhara gets to see Subhadra's diary and comes to know about her past life. After this, Subhadra and Ramanujam come to meet each other and find out that neither of them are happy with their lives. You can find most of Kamala Das' books online.

Like Kamala Das' other books, Nashtapetta Neelambari, too, depicts human relationship and its different aspects. The title refers to the "Neelambari" ragam, the favourite ragam of Subhadra, the female protagonist of the book. The ISBN 10 for this 92 page book is 8171306551, and the ISBN 13 is 9788171306558.
