Overview: Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a devastating literary work of innocence, loss and knowledge. Three children named Tommy, Kathy and Ruth were students of an exclusive public school at Hailsham, a secluded hamlet located in the English countryside. It was a school of mercurial factions, as well as mysterious regulations and the teachers, were all the time reminding their students that they were very special.

Many years pass and Kathy has grown into a fine young woman, when Tommy and Ruth reenter her life again. As they became together once again, Kathy began to reminisce the past they had shared together and realizes what has made them so special, as also how that special gift is going to transform their time together. Thrilling, moving, and beautifully impressive, Never Let Me Go is yet another classic from the versatile pen of the author.

In many ways, the story of the novel is all about problem of how to lead a decent life. Miss Lucy, undoubtedly the most heroic of all characters in the work, suggests that it is far better to confront death with the full understanding of what is coming, instead of ignoring it. As for Kathy, she is fully aware that what lies ahead, but instead turns her attention to her memories as also her current life. Is this practical approach better or worse than Lucy's dismal view? Only the reader can judge!

Kathy's depiction of the youthful trials of Tommy foreshadows the major theme of the novel. Ishiguro never suggests that all are immoral, but describes the world where people always presume that others will speak up for morality, but no one does.

  1.  better than the movie... 29 December, 2013 On

The novel Never Let Me go is a gorgeously written must-read. It flawlessly crosses genres making this book hard to categorize, but compelling to experience. Its beauty lies in its mystery, which makes recommending the movie difficult for me. If you have already read the book, I think you will enjoy how the movie was executed. If you plan on reading it in the future, don't watch the movie. I think the spoilers will hamper your enjoyment of the book. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the movie because of the awful reviews I had read about it. It was cast perfectly and it managed to capture the tone and feel of the original narrative in a way most movies can't. Obviously, the novel is superior in its intricacies, but watching the film was an enjoyable experience.
