Overview: Ntuppakkoranendarnnu

Ntuppakkoranendarnnu is a Malayalam short novel by Viakom Muhammad Basheer, the renowned Keralite fiction writer. Basheer wrote a number of novels and short stories, and he was also a humanist and freedom fighter. The innovative, down-to-earth narrative style that he used to follow in his works has made him popular both among critics and readers. Many of his works have been translated into different languages and this, in turn helped him gain international acclamation. Basheer, one of the most successful writers of India, is often referred as the Baypore Sultan. This is because he chose to live at Baypore during the later years of his life. Some of his remarkable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Mathilukal, Anargha Nimisham, Janmadinam, and Maranathinte Nizhalil. Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu is one of Basheer's most famous works and D C Books published the 24th edition of this book on 1st January, 2007.

Ntuppakkoranendarnnu or My Grandad Had an Elephant is a notable work of Basheer. The novel focusses on the love story of Kunjupathumma and Nisaar Ahamed. While Kunjupathumma is an illiterate, superstitious village girl, Nissar Ahmed is born and brought up in city, and is an educated and progressive man. The dominant mother of Kunjupathumma is against the new-age trends and boasts of the past glory. Basheer shows how education can enlighten people and help them shed old conventions and traditions, which are nothing but means of hiding one's shortcomings. If you are looking for books online, you can find this book in different online bookstores, listed on this page.

Basheer's Ntuppakkoranendarnnu is a strong attack on the age-old superstitious practices that were followed by Muslims. The novel is full of anecdotes and humour from various religious traditions. The very title refers to how people are proud of their past glories like that of their "grandfather's elephant". The book has 104 pages. 8171302602 and 9788171302604 are the ISBN 10 and 13 for the 24th edition of the book, respectively.
