Joseph Kosinki, the director of the movie is known for his use of computer graphics. He was born on May 1973 in Lowa and studied at Columbia graduate school of architecture, planning and preservation where he is currently employed as an assistant professor of architecture. His first big film as a director was Tron:Legacy. He began writing a graphic novel in 2005 which was later adapted for this film.Walt Disney films bought the rights of this novel in 2010. Disney gave up the rights of the film when all attempts failed to keep the film at PG rating. The rights were later acquired by Universal Pictures at a PG 13 rating. Work on the screenplay of this movie was done by William Monahan and its filming began in October 2011 at an estimated budget of $120 million. Tom Cruise was finalized for the lead role with a cast of Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseboroligh and Morgan Freeman.

Tom Cruise is one of the finest and highly paid actors of Hollywood, he started his career with "Endless Love" at a mere age of 19. But his first lead role was in "Risky Business".He became a star overnight with "Topgun" and His role as a secret agent in the "Mission Impossible" series is admired all over the world. The other star of the movie, Morgan Freeman was also appreciated for his role, Freeman is known for his deep god like voice.

The story of Oblivion starts in the year 2077. 60 years after the Earth has been invaded by the Aliens. Cruise as Jack Harper and a few others are the only ones left on the planet while others had relocated to Titan. Harper and his colleague Vica (Andrea) work as technicians for Robert Drones that defends their station from Aliens. Harper and VIca's memories have been wiped out, but Harper is haunted by dreams of a beautiful woman in pre-evaded New York. They are both supervised by Sally ( Mellisa Leo), their boss from an orbiting control center. An antique spacecraft crashes into the country side and Harper manages to rescue one person from craft who looks exactly like the woman of his dream. He brings her back with him to his tower and she turns out to be a Russian astronaut Julia (Olga). The astronaut, though in cryogenic sleep for the last 60 years still refuses to disclose her mission, which gets revealed when Harper finds the flight recorder. Harper and Julia are captured by Scavs who are human survivors. Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman) the leader of Scavs, wants Harper's help to destroy the Ted and he leaves with Julia and Morgan in one of the forbidden radiations.

The production work began in March 2012 and was completed by July 2012. Most of the film was shot in Iceland in June to take full advantage of 24 hour daylight. A lot of technology went into shooting of this film. The film was shot with Sony's Cine Alta F65 camera and was shot in 2k resolution. The soundtrack was given by the French electronic band "M83" which is a band outside the movie business because the director felt that their music was emotional and epic. Black Lot music released the album on 9th April 2013.
