About the Author

Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest authors of all times, has penned this book. He was born in Chicago to a doctor. He spent a part of his youth as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, as well as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war in 1922. However, he eventually gave up his job as a journalist as he had found a new interest: writing stories. He rekindled his friendship with Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein after moving to Paris, and became an avid traveller. In his travels, he saw much of the world, and was inspired to write many stories. His stories and books became very popular in all parts of the world. When he died in 1961, he died a Nobel Prize winner (for literature).

About the Book

The Old Man and the Sea was the book that was instrumental in Hemingway winning the Nobel Prize. So now you can imagine what a well-written book it is! This French edition of the book was published in 1994. The story revolves around 3 main characters: the titular old man, his apprentice (a young boy) and a large fish. This may seem like the book isn't about much. But the simple characters and storyline leave much room for creativity in writing and thoughts.

The old man, Santiago has not caught a single fish in 84 days. This is considered a bad luck. Manolin, the boy who is his apprentice, is forbidden to associate with Santiago by his parents. Santiago, however, refuses to give up. He is not ready to accept his situation. So he embarks on a journey to the Gulf stream to catch the biggest fish he can see. Eventually, he does manage to bait a fish successfully. The fish, a marlin, struggles vehemently though. Santiago is unable to reel it in. Read on to find out the interaction between the old man and the fish!

There is a wide usage or allegory and metaphors in this book. While the story may seem very simple on the surface, further exploration will make it clear that there are many layers to it. We see how the old man refuses to give up even in the face of forces much stronger than him. This book is a beautiful depiction of the struggles that the human nature faces in a lifetime. It will prove to be a very thought provoking read, as well as a motivational one.

It is no surprise that this book is often considered an American classic. Buy The Old Man and the Sea on Junglee today!
