Oru Desathinte Katha (Malayalam Edition), literally the story of a place, is written by S. K. Pottekkatt. The novel is based on the village Athiranippadam and the life of its dwellers. The novel draws upon the history of the country while beautifully painting the picture of a classic Indian village and talking about its historical background through anecdotes and folklore. It was first published in the year 1971 and immediately received critical acclaim in the Malayalam literary sphere. Sankaran Kutty Pottekkatt is better known as S. K. Pottekkatt. The author wrote close to sixty books. His works include novels, short stories, poems, and travelogues. The author wrote ten novels, twenty-four short story collections, three poem anthologies, four plays, eighteen travelogues, an essay-collection, and two books based on his myriad personal experiences. The protagonist of Oru Desathinte Katha, Sreedharan appears to be inspired by the author. Sreedharan was born in a small village called Athiranippadam. People here lead a simple life. They have never experienced urban luxury, yet they have no complaint against their Spartan way of living. Sreedharan leaves the village in search of fortune. Thirty five years later he comes back to discover that his village has changed drastically.

Pottekkatt S.K was honoured with the Jnanpith Award for this novel, in the year 1980. Oru Desathinte Katha won the Sahitya Akademi Award as well. It was later translated to English under the title Tales of Athiranippadam.
