Overview: Panchatantra

Panchatantra, which means the five principles is originally believed to have been written by Pandit Vishnu Sharma around 200 B.C. and now translated by G. L. Chandiramani. Written in the form of short stories, they resonate common themes such as politics, human behaviour, bravery, hatred, jealousy among others. The protagonists in these stories are mostly animals, which inhibit different personality traits that go well with their appearance and behaviour. You can read about the proud Lion, who is the king of the jungle and cannot stand anyone who questions his authority. But the wise, timid Rabbit shows him that the king should be kind and understanding too. So he shows the Lion his own reflection, which he takes for another Lion and attacks the reflection, eventually drowning to his own death.

The tales are philosophically entwined with humour to help the reader understand the importance of being humble and kind. We also learn about the meddlesome monkey, who drives a wedge into his own feet because of his own over-inquisitive nature. Also, we meet the slow-to-learn donkey, whose negligence makes him a social outcast. Often, the stories also include human characters with contrasting personalities such as the stingy holy man and the swindler who loots him. While you feel bad at their loss, you also feel thankful that a lesson has been learned at the end.

These short stories pull lightly at your heart stings, allowing you to open your eyes and understand the gravity behind every situation. There is a story for all kinds of occasions and every mood; that can be read by adults and children alike. The collection of Panchatantra stories are priceless gems, seen as a gift from India to the world that are cherished even today.
