Overview: Partners in Crime

Jeff Strickland, Homicide Investigator is a man of dwindling faith. His personal life is falling apart, and crime-infested city streets do little to help his belief. The monotony of his life is broken when he gets a call to examine a body in the middle of a wasteland. At first, he expects it to be a run-of-the-mill murder scene, but soon finds out, to his horror, that the mutilated victim is the teenage daughter of his old friends, a philanthropist couple.

Kanya, the victim was a wild child. Her love for the city streets had worried Strickland, who doted upon her, but he never imagined that it would ever bring her such peril. Bent on finding her killer and ensuring justice is served, he plunges into the case, discovering multiple possibilities, motives, half-truths and whole lies. A love affair with an unhappy ending? An attack on the parents by taking what they held most dear? Or something deeper?

As Strickland delves deeper into the case and uncovers more evidence, he finds himself becoming a target of the killer, whoever they may be. Strickland soon uncovers the clue that reveals the shocking truth about who killed Kanya, but now he must fight for his own life.

James Reid does away with archetypal storytelling by delivering a complex, layered detective story. Strickland is working under pressure from his superiors and friends, and the case seems to scream conflict of interest. Partners in Crime is a journey of spiritual faith taken along a most unexpected route, but one that ultimately rewards infinitely.

If you pride yourself on figuring out puzzles and solving mysteries, this book will give you a run for your money. The characters are interesting, diverse, flawed yet relatable and for me it really picked up after the 2nd chapter. The main character, Detective Jeff Strickland reminds you of your very own uncle or someone from your old neighborhood who lives to leave a lasting impression on the community he serves. The book gives great insight into the internal conflict of a policeman (from the toll it takes on your psyche after seeing repeated homicides, to learning not to take anything at face value, to showing how political backbiting can interfere with the outcome of a case). I can tell James Reid has done his research regarding Atlanta, politics and the criminal justice system, but its not until I reached the end that I could truly appreciate his creative placements throughout the book. My only critique is less references to childhood nicknames. This book is a page turner and will keep you guessing until the very end. It's worth the money. Well done James Reid!
