Overview: Pathummayude Aadu

This popular Malayalam novel is located in Thalayolaparambu and translates the real life story of the author's sister's goat. Basheer, the author, had participated in the salt satyagraha movement, post that he led a wanderer's life. This book talks of the time when he had to spend time at his home town with his large family instead of his private retreat.

The story narrates real-life incidents where the large family home was forever filled with chaos and noise. The family's domestic animals too treated the house as their own and his sister who lived nearby visited every day with her daughter and their goat. His sister was Pathumma, and the goat was treated as one of their own. The goat was a nuisance and would eat anything that it could find including fallen leaves, clothes, food cooked for family members and it also ate away pages from Basheer's newest print editions.

All the incidents involving his family members, their interactions are laced with the author's trademark satire and humor, making it an engaging read till the last page. It also throws light on the relationship between the author and his brothers who expected financial help from him as well his nephews and nieces whom he tried to discipline.

The entire language is the local slang, making it easy for you to be transported to the situation and hence feel as you are right there as the incidents are taking place. This novel has a long foreword written by the author himself and a longer one by P K Balakrishnan.
