Overview: Persepolis

Persepolis is a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi. Originally the autobiographical commentary on the life of Marjane Satrapi was published by French comic publisher L'Association in four different volumes from 2000 to 2003. Satrapi had vividly etched out a real life story that tells about her teenage life and times in Iran's Tehran. There are daily life portrayals in this novel that also depict the impactful times during the war with Iraq. The story makes the readers live the journey of Marjane and also experience a firsthand account of the triumph of the Islamic Revolution and the years during which the author saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime.

Persepolis I and II gives a detailed look into the childhood of Satrapi set between the times in Iran and her high school years in Vienna, Austria. Both the volumes of the graphic novel set a high standard in the genre of memoirs. The novel has achieved high international accolades and has been translated in various languages viz. Swedish, English, Italian, Catalan, Greek, Spanish and Portuguese.

Satrapi has created a heartwarming book that went on to become an animation movie named Persepolis. Although the representation is more present-day yet the story brings vivid imagery to the minds of the audience. Persepolis I and II have been published in America, UK and France. There are popular Omnibus editions in France. Such has been a wide acceptance and popularity of the graphic novel that Persepolis I and II was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2007 Academy Awards.

Besides being in the film category popularity, Persepolis has earned a special mention in TIME, in the magazine's "Best Comics of 2003" list. Satrapi has given permissions for expansions to the existing novel. There are revised versions available on the internet. Satrapi has turned on the tables of world politics with a simple twist of comic move. The paperback book is available online with ISBN number 10 of 009952399X and ISBN number 13 of 978-099523994.
