Overview: Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a must-read classic tale of comedy, manners, marriages and clash of individualities. There is a network of multiple characters with different shades. Penned by Jane Austen and first published in 1813, the book has never failed to fascinate the reader. There has been a number of dramatic adaptations of this all-time enchanting story of pride and prejudice.

Only a few of the books manage to tell the story in the very first line itself. Pride and Prejudice is one such book. The novel has its first line as, 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.' Indeed, the story starts with the arrival of a young, wealthy and charismatic bachelor, Mr. Bingley, in Netherfield Park. There lives a Bennet family has a witty but ignorant country gentleman, Mr. Bennet, and his socially less gracious wife. They have five daughters and their second daughter, Elizabeth, is the protagonist of the novel. Mrs. Bennet has only one concern in her life: to find husbands for her daughters.

A ball is organised in the town where Mr. Bingley comes along with his friend, Mr. Darcy. There they meet Elizabeth and her sisters. Mr. Bingley seems to have an inclination towards Jane, Elizabeth's older sister, and starts to build an attachment between the two. On the other hand, Darcy and Elizabeth get some friction due to the first's pride and the latter's prejudice.

Later followed some heartbreaks and newborn love interests, where both are not expected. Things changed due to some of the not-so-sociable mannerisms from the Bennet's family and certain ill motives from Mr. Bingley's sister.

Jane Austen was an English novelist known for her romantic fictions. She has got a mark for her realism and social commentary. Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Persuasion are some of her famous works.
