Sampooran Singh Kalra, better known by his pen name, Gulzar, is one of India's most prominent poets and lyricists. Raat Pashmine Ki is a collection of some of Gulzar's most celebrated poems, songs, dialogues and films. Born in 1934 in Deena, Gulzar's family moved to Delhi after the partition. Here, he established himself with his poems and also went on to become a screenplay writer and film director later in his career. Gulzar's poems are mostly written in Urdu and Punjabi, along with many local dialects like Marwari, Khariboli and Haryanvi. The compilations of his poems such as Pandrah Paanch Pachattar and Chand Pukhraak Ka are well known as well as his collection of short stories in Raavi-paar and Dhuan. Gulzar is also credited for writing the anthem 'Nazar Main Rehte Ho' during the India-Pakistan peace campaign.
The writer has penned dialogues for TV series such as Jungle Book, Potli Baba Ki and Alice in Wonderland, in Hindi. He has been nominated for a number of prestigious awards and even won many of them including a National Award for Best Screenplay, Sahitya Akademi Award and many Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist. In 2004, Gulzar was honoured with a Padma Bhushan for his insurmountable contribution to arts in India. The biggest leaf in his hat came when he won the Academy Award in 2009 for penning the lyrics to the song 'Jai Ho' in the film, Slumdog Millionaire.
