This novel Raag Darbari tells the story the failing values which were present during post-Independence in the Indian society. This book talks about the helplessness situations and conditions of intellectuals which was faced by Indians of the strong and corrupt nexus which was between criminals, businessmen, politicians and police. The story in this novel is narrated from the point of view of Ranganath. He is a research student in history who lives with his uncle named Vaidyaji in a village called Shivpal Ganj. Ranganath comes to live with his uncle for few days where he learns how his uncle Vaidyaji is using all the village institution that is the village school, village panchayat. Village panchayat is a local elected body who take the rule over the village and the villagers and the local government offices to serve his own political purpose. The behaviour of his uncle towards the petty village where politicians is in stark contrast to the ideals that Ranganath has learnt to desire during his university education. In this villagers are known as Gunjahe , this word is originated from 'Ganj' of Shivpal Ganj.

Characters in the Story

In this Novel you can read the role of Vaidyaji who is the mastermind behind all village politics and corruption. He is also an officially appointed manager of the local college. Than you can come across Ruppan babu, he is the younger son of Vaidyaji and also the leader of college students. He is also actively involved in all village politics and is well respected among the villagers due to his illustrious parentage. Moving further we have a character known as Badri pehelwaan who is the elder brother of Ruppan babu. He always keeps himself away from his father's involvements and is busy in his body building exercises and taking care of his 'paalak baalak'. This team is widely used for blind followers of a person. Ranganath is other lead character of the story. He has done MA in History and is a nephew to Vaidyaji. Chhote pehelwaan is the one of the 'paalak baalaks' of Badri pehelwaan, he too actively participant in village politics and is a frequent participant in the meetings called by Vaidyaji. Then we have the Principal Sahib, Khanna Master, Jognath and Sanichar. This story talks about how politics has taken over the rule and how they are using people, institutions, government for their own benefits. This novel talks about the condition of the poor villagers who are used due to lack of knowledge about politics, their own rights and much more.     When you know that the drink served to you has priceless tasty "nectar" in each sip ,what do you,simply, take your own time to relish each sip and donot take the other sip, until its lingering taste dies down.You want to relish each and every drop of it and live in its trance eternally.Rag Darbari is once heady concoction of a drink.One has to read it to get that "Divine Kick"!!!
