Overview: The Room of Many Colours

Ruskin Bond, author of British descent, has made his home in India. Since then, he has become an icon in the midst of Indian authors. His debut novel The Room on the Roof, was written when he was a mere seventeen old boy and won the 1957 John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize. Since then, he has penned several novels, around 500 short stories, as also various poems and essays.

Ruskin bond is said to be at his best while writing short stories and The Room of Many Colours confirms the fact. There is something for everyone in this collection of short stories. It includes tales of horror such as the Haunted Bicycle and Whisper in The Dark. It even features comedies such as A Crow for All Seasons, The Fight and Masterji, mysteries as in Eye of The Cat and He Said It with Arsenic, etc.

The Room of Many Colours is about 150 pages in length, with most of the tales being brief ones covering hardly six pages on average. However, there are longer stories also such as "Time Stops at Shamli" and "Room of Many Colors". On the whole, there are 19 stories in this collection of short stories. It would be interesting go into a few of them.

"A Crow for All Seasons" is a unique story because its main character is a crow called Speedy. In the story, he describes the life style of crows in general, their likes and dislikes. In the process, you get a good idea of a crow's point of view of human beings. 'Dust on the Mountain' describes the journey of Vishnu, a young villager, who leaves home to find his fortune in the city, so that he can earn enough money to feed his family back home. In 'Time Stops at Shamli', a writer travelling on a train, feels like getting down at the station of the obscure village Shamli, and goes through various experiences there. These are a just sample of the stories that you will find very interesting.

Ruskin Bond won the 1992 Sahitya Academy award for his collection of short stories entitled Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra. He went on to receive the ultimate honour of Padma Shri in the year 1999, for his unique contribution to children's literature.
