In this movie universe, there are so many detective movies and novels. When Satyajit Ray set out to make this movie, he surely wanted something that was different. This movie is different.
The plot like any Feluda plot is complex, and yet simple. The characters are deep, complex creatures with vices, and redeeming factors. In amongst them stands Feluda and his goendagiri (detecting).
To say that Soumitra Chatterjee is good is passe. He always is, and plays his part with the intensity and panache required. Ajoy Banerjee and Kamu Mukherjee bring in that subtle amalgam of humor, nastiness and plain jane villainry required. The character though who defines this movie is Santosh Dutta. I do not think this movie would have gotten made if not for him and his antics. In fact Satyajit Ray himself admitted that.
That said, my final vote as always goes to the master filmaker that is Satyajit Ray. His soundtrack, art, the sheer landscapes, the superb script and the direction are par excellence. Truly one to watch from India's best film maker ever.
