Overview: Safe Haven

Safe Haven, written by Nicholas Sparks, is a romantic novel, which tells the story of a 27-year-old woman named Katie. When she first moves to Southport in North Caroline, everyone in the neighbourhood wants to get acquainted with Katie but she keeps to herself, never really mingling with anybody, except for her neighbour Jo. Over time, though, Kathy forms a friendship with a widowed store owner named Alex. She takes a liking to his kids and ultimately, a romance begins to blossom between the two.

But Katie is scared. The devils in her past are still haunting her, and she needs to bury them forever. With the help of Jo and Alex, Katie begins to reinvent a new life, but not before she is confronted by someone from her past. What drove Kathy away from her old home, all the way to Southport? Will she ever trust herself enough to give in to the love that she feels for Alex?

Nicholas Sparks is a well-known American novelist, who has published several books including The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Dear John and Message in a Bottle. Sparks wrote his first two unpublished novels when he was in high school, realising that writing was his true calling. After passing out though, he faced trouble getting attention as a writer and had to carry out a lot of odd jobs to keep his head above the water. His struggle as a novelist, however, was rewarded when The Notebook was picked up by a major publishing firm, and the book reached the New York best-seller list within its first week. Almost all his books have been adapted into films, further garnering fans for his works.
