Overview: The Sea of Innocence

The Sea of Innocence is the story of Delhi-based social worker and crime investigator, Simran Singh. Simran heads to Goa for a much-deserved break and takes her adopted daughter with her. In Goa, while enjoying the pristine beaches and idyllic life, Simran receives a video message of a girl being harassed by several men.

Following the disappearance of the British teenager Liza Kay, Simran speaks to her sister and understands that this is not a simple case of disappearance, but there is a lot more at play. Simran realises that she has to see this case through and so she sends her daughter back home and begins investigating this strange case. As she gets involved in the case, she exposes herself to grave danger.

This novel showcases the dangerous underbelly of an otherwise picturesque location. While Goa is known the world over for its beauty, the author paints a grim picture of this tourist destination. The book also sheds light on the attitude of police and government authorities in burying the seedier side of Goa to promote and sustain the false image of this vacation paradise. Throughout the novel, you are drawn into the interesting investigation undertaken by Simran exposing the nexus between the drug network and powerful politicians.

The book has an easy narrative with the language being quite simple and so it makes for an engaging read. While reading the book, you can easily identify with the passion shown by Simran in uncovering the reality. Kishwar Desai is a columnist and an author and has written several books. Some of the other books written by the author include Origins of Love and Witness the Night. You can shop online for the paperback edition of the book published by Simon & Schuster with ISBN-10: 1471128377 and ISBN-13: 978-1471128370.
