One storage for all wifi/network enabled device
23 January, 2014
I am using 2 tb goflex home for last 3 years. Still it has more than a tb free space to be filled up. Setup is easy.
This device has stora Linux running inside it which provides the network access and dlna support. You need to connect the device with your router using network cable. It has a usb port for adding more storage, however, you can't use usb wifi stick to connect to the local network.
Follow the tutorial and anybody can setup the system. Don't create more than one user because it divides the hard disk space equally and there is now way to control the size of each user space.
App to access files from the goflex-home device are available in apple and android app store. Alas, all my phones are windows phone so I have to use web access to see my photos, songs, documents and pdfs. In windows phone, open IE and enter the ip address of the device. Enter username and password to authenticate. Then enter ip_address/mobile to access the device. Remembering ip address of the nas is difficult and if the router is configured for dhcp then it will be more difficult. So assign a fixed address to the goflex-home device in the router settings and then use the device name in place of ip address. If you have a smart TV ( internet enabled tv) or Xbox console you can access the media from the device using dlna.
If you are looking more from the device, you can access the storage from anywhere in the internet through Seagate share site.
This device can do few more things that is not available by default. Search for stora Linux capabilities. You will be surprised to know few more tricks which I want you to explore by yourself.
Read/write speed of the device is moderate. Blu-ray movie streaming will be difficult. For any other lower format movies will be fine.
If you are looking for data safety, go for two bay nas with RAID control.
