Serious Men by A Manu Joseph is a touching, bitingly funny satire on life as it lived in India and also a romantic story with a backdrop of a scientific research institute as also the humid tenements of Mumbai.
The principal character, Ayyan Mani is not in any way restrained by the age old traditions of India. Although he was employed at a premier research institute in Mumbai, as a humble personal assistant for a highly intelligent but unbearable astronomer, he often dreams of a better life for himself as also his family.
As an ambitious and wily person, Ayyan prepares two plots: the first is to ardently cheer up his tired, ever wife addicted to the TV soap opera serials by inventing shocking and highly fictitious anecdotes about their son who is hardly ten years old; the other plot is to trouble the married director of the institute by taking advantage of his employers apparent romance with an attractive female researcher. Meanwhile, as the high caste Brahmins at the institute are in conflict with one another over far-fetched theories of alien life, Ayyan observes his planned shams entwining and kick-starting a plethora of bizarre events that he is quite unable to stop. Unfailingly hilarious and impertinent, Serious Men is an amusing depiction of runaway ambitions and egos as also a touching portrayal of love and all its mysterious workings.
Ayyan is always malicious toward his more privileged superiors, so that he in his own deceitfully naughty way goes on to pull off a devious stunt that culminates with his ordinary, half-deaf son being declared as a boy prodigy in the local news bulletins. Soon his carefully created lies come under suspicion and whole story ends in a humorous note. Manu Josephs neatly depicted characters exude warmth and wit in this highly interesting and introspective story.
