Shahid is a biographical film directed by Hansal Mehta , produced by Anurag Kashyap and is based on the life of the most controversial figures of our time, lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in Mumbai. This film has received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success at the box office. The film won the National Film Award for Best Actor and Best Director at the 61st National Film Awards ceremony.
The film opens with murder of Shahid Azmi (Rajkummar Rao) and goes into flashback to the violence during the Bombay Riots. Shahid witnesses cold-blooded murders and in anger runs away to Pakistan-administered Kashmir. He spends a brief period at a militant training camp, but soon returns. He is arrested under the TADA, in Mumbai for an alleged conspiracy to assassinate some politicians. After being brutally tortured by the police and forced to admit to the crime, he spends seven years at Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
During his stay at Tihar Jail Omar Sheikh (Prabal Panjabi) tries to brainwash him while another jail mate War Saab (K K Menon) inspires him to start his college education. After being acquitted of the charges, he goes ahead to study law in Mumbai.On receiving his degree, Shahid works with lawyer Majeed Memon (Tigmanshu Dhulia) for some time before starting his career as an independent lawyer with the financial support of his elder brother Arif (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub).
In this process he meets Mariam (Prabhleen Sandhu) a Muslim divorcee and marries her. He soon starts picking up cases of Muslims charged under the POTA and fights many cases in consultation with NGOs. He tastes his first major success as a defense lawyer, when Arif Paanwala, who was arrested under POTA in 2002 Mumbai bus bombing, is acquitted due to lack of evidence by the court.Shahid then goes on to represent the accused in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, the 2006 Aurangabad arms haul, the 2006 Malegaon bombings case. He gets criticized for supporting terrorists and starts getting threatening calls which ends up disrupting his family life.
He gets shot by two armed gunmen in his own office while defending Faheem Ansari in the 2008 Mumbai attacks case, and dies on the spot. Later in the film Ansari is shown to be acquitted of all the charges by the Supreme Court of India due to lack of evidence.
