Overview: Social Animal: A Story of How

Writer David Brooks presents his findings on the human brain through the book, The Social Animal: A Story of How Success Happens. This book has become an instant favorite of readers across the globe and has received many plaudits. This novel revolves around two characters that are highly successful even though they don't have any special qualities. This novel got a great opening as it debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and was on the third spot on the Publishers Weekly best-sellers list for non-fiction. This book is also the favorite of British Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader, David Cameron.

This book revolves around the characters of Harold and Erica. These two characters are based in contemporary America and are very successful. Both are married to each other and are living a satisfied life. Harold is doing well as a management consultant, then a historian, then a think-tank intellectual. He has always stayed in the limelight as he was very popular in his school days as well as an athletic high-school boy who was close to idealism. His wife Erica is completely opposite. She is half Chinese-American and half Mexican-American, who had to struggle in her childhood. She works hard to create her own firm and now has established herself as a big player in Washington politics. The book traces the journey of these characters from their childhood and till their retirement and shows how one can become successful even without having innate capabilities or skills. The author focuses on what economists call non-cognitive skills.

David Brooks is one of the most influential writers of this era. His column, which features in the New York Times, has become a sensation. He has also authored the book, Bobos In Paradise.
