William Boyd received his education at Nice University, Glasgow University and Oxford. Boyd was also awarded the Whitbread First Novel Prize, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Prix Jean Monn. He was also featured in the 20 'Best of Young British Novelists' list by Granta magazine and the Book Marketing Council. Boyd also serves as a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Literature and commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005.
