Hollywood made gargantuan historical throughout its own history: Ben Hur, Anne of Thousand Days, Cleopatra et al. There had been a lull but the Gerald Butler smash-hit 300 rekindled interest in historical. Spartacus himself had been brought back to life in the 60s by Universal with Kirk Douglas enacting the part.
Though Spartacus: Blood and Sand is visually pleasing. The actors are all hunks with six and eight packs. Accuracy? Well, that always has been a casualty in Hollywood movies. But, we are not looking for history lesson, are we? Enjoy the movie which gripping at times. You may be tricked into believing that blood is oozing out of your plasma TV that is how gory the movie is. You might conclude that Quentin Tarantino could learn a thing or two from this TV show, so graphic are the violence and sex for good measure.
The story has you hooked from the word go and you will find yourself overly eager to know what is going to happen next. It is obvious that the actors have taken their job to their heart. The notorious thief from Mummy, John Hannah, goes to town here as the slave owner Batiatus who would want to be known to one and all as part of the elite brigade. Lucy Lawless is as enticing as ever. Andy Whitfield is no Russell Crow but he makes a good gladiator nevertheless. You wont regret buying this Blu-Ray if you did.
