The Story of My Life, the Enriched Classics (Pocket Edition) is about the renowned Helen Keller who was rendered blind and deaf at 18 months, by scarlet fever. Her disabilities did not stop her from achieving what most of us able bodied persons can even dream to achieve.
The book is an extraordinary autobiography by the remarkable, Helen Keller who overcame the challenges in her life and made her mark in history and humanity. She was an author, fiery political activist as well as a lecturer. She loved to travel and was an active member of the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World. Helen Keller day is observed in the US on June 27 by a Presidential proclamation by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. She championed the cause of women and other numerous causes and was inducted into the Alabama's Women's Hall of Fame in 1971.
One of her very touching quotes in the book was when she said "Is it not true, then, that my life with all its limitations touches at many points the life of the World Beautiful? Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content". It says a lot about the author, who even under a great disadvantage is not bitter about her life of darkness and silence. In many of her writings, she describes her pitiable childhood where she exploded in a rage when she could not communicate what she wanted, and no one could understand.
