Overview: A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities a classic tale set in two cities:London and Paris, during the French Revolution. It is also considered to be one of the finest fictional literature in the history. Written by Charles Dickens, the novel has its base as the demoralisation of the French peasantry by the French aristocrats, which led to the revolution.

Dr. Manette is a British physician, who has been wrongly imprisoned in Bastille, Paris, for eighteen years. Due to such a long stay inside the prison, he builds up an obsession for making shoes, which learned there. Finally, he gets to reunite with his daughter, Lucie, who has always lived with the impression that her father is dead.

Two different but well-qualified men enter their lives; an English lawyer, Sydney Carton, and a French aristocrat, Charles Darnay. Sydney Carton is portrayed as an alcoholic but as the story proceeds, he turns out to have good and selfless heart. On the other hand, a secret from Charles Darney's background comes up and causes him the closeness that he has built over the time with the Manettes. It makes him and his friends return to France where the mob threatens their destruction.

Charles Dickens was a prolific 19th century author known for his short stories, novellas, and both fiction and non-fiction novels. He is famous for his mastery in character descriptions and depictions of their lives and social classes. Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol are two of his other famous works.
