He is currently a professor in the Department of Psychology and the Graduate Program in Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego and has been associated with them since 1998. Born to Tamil parents, Ramachandran moved around a lot like a child. Ramachandran has published over 180 papers in various scientific journals making him highly recognized and respected in the scientific community.
