The Immortals of Meluha Overview

1900 B.C. In what modern Indians mistakenly call the Indus Valley Civilisation. The inhabitants of that period called it the land of Meluha a near perfect empire created many centuries earlier by Lord Ram, one of the greatest monarchs that ever lived. This once proud empire and its Suryavanshi rulers face severe perils as its primary river, the revered Saraswati, is slowly drying to extinction. They also face devastating terrorist attacks from the east, the land of the Chandravanshis. To make matters worse, the Chandravanshis appear to have allied with the Nagas, an ostracised and sinister race of deformed humans with astonishing martial skills. The only hope for the Suryavanshis is an ancient legend: When evil reaches epic proportions, when all seems lost, when it appears that your enemies have triumphed, a hero will emerge. Is the rough-hewn Tibetan immigrant Shiva, really that hero? And does he want to be that hero at all? Drawn suddenly to his destiny, by duty as well as by love, will Shiva lead the Suryavanshi vengeance and destroy evil?

Review

Today, Shiva is a god. But four thousand years ago, he was just a man. 1900 BC: the once-proud Suryavanshi rulers of the Meluha Empire are in dire peril. The empire's primary river, the Saraswati, is slowly drying up. There are devastating terrorist attacks from the east, the land of the Chandravanshis - and to make matters worse, the Chandravanshis appears to have allied with the Nagas, an ostracised race of deformed humans with astonishing martial skills. The only hope for the Suryavanshis is an ancient prophecy: when evil reaches epic proportions and all seems lost, a hero will emerge...

    Fast Paced!!!! 3 February, 2012
Just awesome!!! This is the word I will say about this book. This is all about a tribal man....who become the 'Maha Dev' or the god of the gods. Plotted in 3400 B.C. A nice interpretation of ancient Hindu mythology and civilization by Amish Tripathi. After reading this book, you will see the Hindu mythological characters in a new light.

    A must read!!!

How I Discovered Lord Shiva 26 April, 2013
I remember picking up ‘The Immortals of Meluha’ only after the second book in the Shiva Trilogy was published. And I was hooked on from page one!!! Amish Tripathi has wonderfully woven a tale with its roots in mythology and faith and its heart in a dynamic God, Lord Shiva. With a host of beautifully etched out characters like Sati, Nandi, Bhadra, Brihaspati, Parvateshvar, Ayurvati (to name a few), The Immortals of Meluha was an enthralling book and it helped me discover Lord Shiva!

Great story line, combination with mythology. But, language & writing can be improved . 20 August, 2012
The book is exciting. The overall thought process, story line, psychology, etc is very good. But, the way this book is written leaves a lot to be desired. At places, there are some cheap jokes, there are grammatical mistakes too.

On the whole, I liked the book because of its interesting story line. The way author has combined mythology with a real story is simply superb. Being from India, I can relate to so many of these things. Amish Tripathi seems to be the Dan Brown of India.

    Interesting Story 2 February, 2012
The author has amalgamated facts and fiction really well to create a spell binding and interesting story. The language is easy and you can finish the book in one setting, but the story is quite gripping. It's good to read about mythology from a fiction point of view

Nice concept, well written and some daring ideas

Nice concept, well written and some daring ideas- they very well summarise this book. The language is simple and lucid. You get a feeling like you are reading a comic. This is not a history book, some of the ideas are really daring and cannot stand the scrutiny of penetrating historians. I, especially liked the idea of the meaning of "Har Har Mahadev". In short, I think the book is immensely readable and the writer can really go a long way. BUT, I would like to suggest something to Amish. By writing a trilogy, I hope he knows what he's doing. A new writer, his first book.....and incomplete. Asking your readers to keep waiting for the next episode----isn't it a bit too much to ask for, Mr. Amish. So I suggest the next book be complete in itself. The trilogy can very well be in sequels rather than episodes. Good luck!

A very interesting concept: Shiva as a mere mortal helping to destroy 'evil'. The more interesting struggle at heart is knowing what "

I was never a real fan of Indian Mythology ....until I read Immortals of Meluha ...my excitement seems to increase with every chapter. I really wished for a second that everything in the book really happened. My verdict is that this is one book you should not miss.

    Mythology redefined 2 April, 2013
This book is certainly a credit to indian writing in english as well as attempt to relook at mythology. The story set in ancient india, goes about meshing using our various folktales and providing a structure so that our mythology may be very real after all. It certainly builds and anticipation for parts to come and mysteries to be revelaed

interesting imagination, good story 2 April, 2013
I loved the way amish has imagined a mortal shiv. A human who would rise to the level of god by its deed. Having read the book, i feel though the narration could have been better, the overall story is compelling. I will wait to see some producer to pick it up for a grand movie.
