Overview: Things Fall Apart

A classic tale with a modern twist, Things Fall Apart is a refreshing read. It recounts a powerful moment in the history of Africa. Set in a traditional Nigerian village, it speaks of the importance of communal unity. The central character of this book is Obi Okonkwo, who's determined to fight for the freedom of his clan and preserve its traditional customs. Courageous and fearless, he refuses to show anyone his weaknesses. Summing up the African historic struggle against colonialism, Chinua Achebe re-creates tribal life in Africa before the coming of Europeans, while giving a detailed portrayal of the harsh changes brought on by the British race.

Achebe gives readers an emotional and refreshingly original story, narrated with a hint of warm humour. Read on and follow the life of Obi Okonkwo, as he breaks apart from his father's complacent life to accomplish something great on his own accord. The subtle storyline traces the obstacles he goes through during his childhood years. After accidentally killing a clansman, Okonkwo is sent into exile for 7 years. As he returns home, he watches the transformation of his tribal land into a European-centric one. Urging people to abolish Western customs and go back to their culture is a tactless struggle, leading to the disintegration of Okonkwo and his village.

Chinua Achebe was educated at the University College of Ibadan, Nigeria. He currently works at Bard College, New York. Buoyed on by the easy adoption of European customs in tribal lives, he was keen to write Things Fall Apart to counter-attack the inaccurate descriptions of Africa by British authors. His other popular novels include Anthills of the Savannah and A Man Of The People. This book has earned Achebe the patronizing title of the man who invented African literature.
