  1.  Is free will just an illusion? 27 November, 2013 On
I have an almost visceral memory of the time I picked this book. It was a period of a lot of travelling (and sitting across various airports and hotels), a lot of Radiohead and a lot of PKD. And all three of them are fused in my memory as a singular experience interwoven with each other. Even now when I hear paranoid android, my mind cannot help get drawn to these books.

The reason I picked 'Three Stigmata' was quite simple. I found the title fascinating and magnetic. Even by PKD's standards.

Palmer Eldrich is a mysterious man and one if his three stigmata is an eerie electronic eye (the other two being his artificial arm and steel teeth). He returns to the solar system where earth is held under a blanket of searing heat and far-flung sober colonies remain the only refuge. He does not return empty handed, though. He brings immortality(and perhaps God) in the form of a drug which appears to go way beyond the existing perception-altering drug that is popular in the solar system.

"There is deep stuff here that I am not getting", is the thought that will perhaps take deeper root in your mind as you grind through this book. Personally, I believe that the less you try to get to the bottom of whats really going on, the more you'll enjoy the book. There is a very vivid world that PKD paints (however caricaturish or quirky it may be) and a distinct mood that he creates(that is balanced on a knife edge between despair and silliness) which will keep you engrossed and occupied. And you can even let your brain suffer the occasional trauma of trying to make sense of what's really going on.

As with any PKD novel there are important topics here that are being introduced (and perhaps even explored). There is consumerism, spirituality, corruption, competition and the eternal theme of reality and identity. Even if you are not really sure of what to make of the last section of the book, this is in the mould of PKD's rich series of oddly-disturbing and deliciously-convoluted stories that you will enjoy if you like PKD's works.
