Overview: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is written by Eric Carle, a renowned American illustrator and designer, who is most famous for this childrens book. Carle's contribution as a childrens author was honoured by the American literary circuit with the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is intended for very small children, who are just learning new words and expressions. It is adored by children and parents across the world and has been translated into fifty five languages.

The speciality of the book is that it contains mostly bright and colourful images. The use of words is kept to a minimum as small children are more attracted to images rather than words. It rectounts a story of how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. A caterpillar's transformation into butterfly is rapid and startling. No other animal in the world shifts from one avatar to another in a matter of a few weeks. It is amazing to note how a hairy caterpillar drastically changes into an amazingly colourful buttery over weeks. In this book, the journey of a caterpillar towards becoming a butterfly is illustrated step by step, phase after phase, with the artistic use of colours, in order to teach children not just new words, but also numbers, and even the importance of good nutrition.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar can entertain children for hours. They can read it aloud, distinguish colours by themselves and marvel at the colourful caterpillar going through periodic changes. The creature eats all kinds of food, and thereby makes kids aware of their nutritional contents. The protagonist caterpillar eats its way through an apple, two plums and three pears and so on, going through a great mound of food before it turns into a butterfly. The New York Times praised the gorgeous illustrations of the book and the brilliance of thoughts invested in its creation. Published by Penguin UK, the 28 pager paperback edition of the book has the ISBN 10 number 0140569324 and ISBN 13 number 9780140569322.

I bought board book for my nephew when he turned 6m.
Why I love it? I have not one but 3 reasons!
    1. Few pages to flip: Matches with short attention span of babies
    2. Holes in pages and increasing size of pages gives good opportunity to interact with book
    3. Teaches babies numbers, days of week and few food items names
