Vyakti Aani Vyalli contains twenty characters with various shades and layers. For example, Bhaiya Nagpurkar, a rich Brahmin often mistaken for a Muslim, is an admirer of Gandhi. The music connoisseur loves to drink, but refrains himself from drinking alcohol when Gandhi is fasting. Through the characters like Narayan, Namu Parit and Paropakari Gampu, the author focuses on the style of living of those days and people's approach to life. In one story, Namu Parit is a washer man, who intentionally damages the buttons of clothes that his customers give him to wash. He does this, so that his customers junk those clothing, and he can use them. This washer man possesses deplorable habits. Yet his super ego is unaffected by them. His conscience does not prick him, and therefore he does not think what he is doing is morally wrong, or that his character needs rectification. In another story, Lakhu Risbud is an aspiring author. He loves to write and dreams that one day he will change the world through his literary creations. His dreams, aspirations, struggles for recognition are beautifully described through the words of the author. Despite his wholehearted efforts and honest hard work, Lakhu ends up working as an assistant editor at a magazine that does not have much circulation.
Deshpande wonderfully depicts the dreams, aspirations, ambitions, disenchantment and failure of the characters. The beauty of the book lies in the simplicity of its narrative and the wonderful prose.
